Fixed a few bugs

Monday, August 16th, 2010

I fixed a few bugs today. One really had me stumped. I was stumped on the bug that would not let me restart the game after dying 3x. Im stillnot sure what exactly cured it but its cured.  I came across the cordy game a few days ago..Totally inspired me. I love how once a certain location is reached and you can trigger events by jumping on objects for example, buttons. I implemented that idea in the last level-of course I would love to do more of that, but that involves some serious thinking–plus coding camera movements–NOT THERE YET! but i will be.   I added a button with an arrow pointing to indicated that ziggy needs to jump on the button to release the draw bridge!!!I will user bob berkebile new class that he recently updated to trigger the rotation on that bridge.

I also plan on getting my blog to show categories. For example, If i blog about xml, javascript–all of it gets categorized. I also plan on having a complete gaming section–since this is one of my new fond hobbies!!:)

Level 3- Wrapping it up!

wrapping up level 3

So I worked on this game throughout the weekend. You know we always have people over- so I worked on it off and on but most of today. I managed to get through most of Level 3. I added some unique game play. It consists of a push button in which ZiggyPop has to make it to. You basically have to access the arrow on top of it to trigger a Draw bridge that with fall down and lead to the mushroom hut at the other end. Almost done!

Wrapping the project as a whole-I notice some bugs that I am working on. I also notice that if you die-it restarts  back at level 1. I think thats not a good idea. End user should start back at the level they died in. So i will have to change to code for ziggys control per level. I have a script that is the same for each, but it needs to be altered per level because its causing the respawn @ level 1.hmm let me  think about this. So if the end user is in X level….if they die-they should restart back in that level. If they died at least 3 times, they should then should have to restart the entire game back at level one. Ill review my code to see what can  be done.
I also realize techniques that will help me on future games. Like I said- I could develop a  game like this in no time-If I would have to do it again.I

Level 2 Background change-whats next?

Saturday, August 14th, 2010

If one would observe the previous screencapture that posted, It shows ZIggy making it to level 2. I guess its hard to tell that you are in a new level, but you are. SO I went in and made changes to the sky-to indicate the difference. I will also do so in level 3.

I will go in and build level 3 throughout the weekend. I fixed the part where at the end of Level 1-her trigger automatically throws up a “Heck Yea” screen and throws her into the second game map. I made it so that the “Completion Screen”-remains permanent until the enduser clicks contine. Then Ziggy is dropped into the second map.

On A flex/flash builder note. I have been doing lots of research and tutorials. The only issues is I cant get it installed on none of my pcs-and its only a demo version. Why am I trying to get into flex? Well- multiple reasons. Besides that its always great to expand skills, Adding mini applicaton development ensures alot of me because you never know what the future may hold. So If i can develop mini apps or just any sort of interactivity in flex–that would be awesome. I am trying to develop an app in flash alone but seems like I will have to work with flex(although flex uses Actionscript 3) and php. PHP seems very frightening!!! But thats another post for another day.
All I can say is its amazing what one can accomplish when you really want to.

Screen capture of Level 1 through Level 2

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

I finally uploaded a screen recording of levels 1-2. I also went in an implemented a character selection screen in which the “end user” will have the ability to go in and choose which character they want. Do i have 2 other characters underdevelopment? No- only one!WHat are my plans with this game upon completion. Yes- I do plan on releasing this on the IPHONE/IPAD. This game actually should have been completed months ago-but I have been slacking on development. I could actually sit here and code up all the rest of the gameplay/menus/ and other screens within about 5-6 hours, but I have other priorities at the moment.

I plan on getting super duper seriously about Casual Game Development for the iphone/ipad/android. Obviously development using javascript only! Though this engine supports C# and Boo. Javascript as I iterated earlier–resembles actionscript to me. I –did some research a few days back on iphone apps. Yes, lots of the apps suck but have gotten published. I will be so ecstatic to release my apps. Ive seen 8 year kids publish their apps on the iphone and they appear to be quite underdeveloped, but hey just getting your app in the appstore to me is a great deal! Regardless of how much cash I generate from this game and some other games I plan on developing--I absolutely love this.
I came up with another idea for a new game, but I need to wrap this one up first. I have several kid games in my head that I want to develop and get published......time will tell. Hopefully the ZIggyPop game will be out by October 2010.

Game play now consists of 2 levels.1 more level is under development.

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

My game now has 2 levels. I did get the collisions to work. I utilize the itween class developed by Bob Berkebile. The class is also helping me with another project for work. I use it for simple movements. It cuts down on the coding by using this class-very handy. Anyways- The game actually should have been complete but I am constantly testing it to see if it is too challenging. I will have the levels get harder as the game progresses.

***I realize that unity has allowed me to easily transition to actionscript 3.0. Maybe because I have read so much javascript code and even created my own little snippets in unitron- its making the transition super smooth. The transition has been delayed and delayed-but delving back into as3.0 t after experimenting with unity the past 6 months makes it definately more understandable and worthwhile. I think the reason is-that in unitron I can see visual updates of my code and get a better understanding of how code is implemented in games and that helps me translate it into actionscript 3.0

I went through half of an as3 book in 3hrs. I just ordered another!

Game progress

Saturday, April 3rd, 2010

I have been slacking a bit on this project. Simply because the collisions work in a smaller file but not the actual game file. And I am working a game for work-which definately trumps this personal project. Anyways..I can’t seem to get ziggys collision with the dinosaur to trigger a print function. Below is the game status.

Animation Pipeline started

Friday, March 12th, 2010

The animation for my game has begun. I am working a bit backwards here but there is always room for improvement and this is my first real game(at least in my eyes). The main character-ZIGGY I haver her walk cycle, but no idles or jumps. I will work on those this weekend. I also added an opponent.  A baby dinosaur. He will be an object in which the main character should avoid withing the game. He is walking now and that may be all that I do with him.

object collection, gui updates

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

I have been busy the last several months. Now that I knocked out the project, I am ready to get back on the grind with my unity3d games. Today- I went backinto my mushroom game. I added some objects that can be collected, a sound when they are collected, and a gui hud that updates whenever they are collected.  Check out the progress on my youtube page.

scorm wrapper challenges

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Before launching the largest flash developed e learning course-i encountered a scorm set back. The raw score was being sent to the LMS only in firefox and Safari, but not Internet Explorer. Turns out-IE is not as forgiving as most of the newer browsers. Also, in scorm test track software, the course would immediately crash onload (that is using only IE). But in firefox, it would not. I thought-along with others thought javascript was disabled on my pc. But this happened on multiple pcs—-turns out. Scorm test track has an option called rudimentary settings. I went in there and changed everything to “DO NOTHING”. The course then loads, but hey–thats not something I would have control over on all LMS. So i had to get get down to the route of the problem. Well, in the scorm api….some of the code needed to be commented out and not suspended which was causing the crash and in the scorm interface file..also. In the next few months I will begin to experience with different  API WRAPPERS.

This task here took about a week of researching. It actually was common sense and I did not appear to look right in front of me. Anyways–so i have some new elearning related goals I would like to see myself accomplish-in the near future. And these of course all involve scorm. Scorm and some bits of 3d.

Scorm Happy

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

The past year I have been creating learning objects from scratch and making them function with LMS.Why is this
important? Having the skills or knowledge to work with scorm opens a lot of doors. Having the ability to take
work and make is scorm compliant allows the creation of  custom applications geared particularly for
students-and have their scores fed to a LMS. In other words, a developer can take any object and make it corform
with certain standards and see their students end results(pass/failure/complete/incomplete).

What else can be done?
Custom training software
Games
Activities
Videos

The biggest kicker of all..is games. Anygame in flash can become scorm conformant with scores sent to an LMS.
Lets take for example, a kids space game with a rocket. A kid drives a rocket in outer space, land on certain
planets, answer questions here and there. Final scores sent to an LMS. The applications is not only a learning
object but it becomes an educational adventure game where children can thrive while learning.

Another example. This example is catered heavely to the telecommunications industry. Lets say for the coolness
factor, you  have a virtual 3d store.
The store has employees, customers, store manager, and store products. Pretty much a simulated virtual 3d store.
A first person or 3rd person controlled character can navigate the environment–in any order. When the character
collides with a worker, or object(counter) a series of questions or instructions may appear. The character
atagonist, maincharacter—whomever has the ability to follow the task at hand or answer the questions, regardless of
the task -scoring is necessary. Obviously a series of directions may need to appear in GUI from time to time
to lead the character. Maybe after a certain areas have been entered and completed a door to the managers office
opens or maybe that triggers a character to appear.

Is this even possible? heck yeah! anythings possible with
given time, research, and tools…especially the power of javascript- the world can be conquered..well the
virtual world in this here case. Javascript has the ability to communicate with a pletora of languages.

Of course Level 4 projects like these involve a great deal of time and research- developing and finalizing a piece
like this is very rewarding!!! I have a watered down version that created. I will post a screencapture in the coming days. I do plan on converting this project.

2010 a new year-new resolutions and lots of success!!!

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Its a new year. New ideas mixed with old. I have a few projectst that i would like to polish out-and complete-and even start. I also have a couple of career goals I indeed would like to see myself achieve. I have my plan outlined in 3 month increments. I take everything 3 months at a time-because its the farthest I can see at times. Glancing back at my goals and objectives of the previous year- I accomplished alot skill wise and am indeed proud of myself. This year- I would like to see myself do more with what I have learned this past year.

game play walkthrough #1

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

This is my first walk through. Yes- i see places where the character’s mesh is going through. Some areas also needs collsion on them. Some of the environment models are also not correct–if you view the concept sketch- the level is a bit off. I will adjust accordingly to resemble the map.  A couple other elements are needed for this environment.

2-d platform Game progress in 3d environment

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

v1After working with Elearning/ Interactive/ Animation  media for almost nearly 5 years…I realize that this project is the best I have done. Not far as quality but aesthetic. I quickly whipped up the models just to see what are the possibilities as far development goes. Whats amazing about this project is the fact that I took my “own” character and made a world for her that which she could navigate. I see so many possibilities with having game development skills and working with elearning. Its amazing what you can do -if you place your heart into it.

Main character

ziggyCheck out Ziggy!! She is the main character that I am working on for the game. She will endure many obstacles on her short challenge. I am so proud because this will be my first completed game.

I have been working vigourously on the environment map models, which is based on the concepted sketch below.  I try to give the world a fantasy feel…hope it turns out well.environmentmap

mini Indie game development

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Hi. I have been working on a mini game. Here is an image of the  concepted environment.vonni_game I am currently modeling the world in 3d. The object of the game is to basically get from point A to point B. Point A is represented by a windmill home. Point B is represented by the mushroom home. So here I will be posting the development process from start to finish. The character will obviously have a series of challenging obstacles that may prevent her from reaching her destination.
